Youth Talk 2018

Youth Talk #ENDViolence #SafeToLearn held in Malaysia on the 8th of August 2018 was the second Youth Talk held globally, following UNICEF’s global initiative to create space for the importance of youth voices to be heard concerning issues of bullying and violence in schools. In hopes to reduce staggering statistics and reports of violence and bullying, Youth Talk Malaysia brought together 50 students from across 20 over schools consisting of student leaders and representatives of their schools for an exclusive time. The students started with a pre-session where they got to engage and critically discuss issues of bullying and to find solutions together. The two main drive-points were emphasizing on what children themselves can do to tackle the issue and what children think adults can contribute and do in helping solve the issue. The event was followed up by a Panel Session consisting of members of Parliament, key influencers and experts in the field namely YB Nurul Izzah Anwar, YB P. Prabakaran, Lisa Surihani, Siwon Choi, Dr. Goh Chee Leong and Mr. Philip Ling. It was an impactful and eye-opening discussion driven and powered by the conversations from youths in the pre-session, to discuss together on practical ways in moving forward to end violence both individually and institutionally.

CCM STEM UP CHALLENGE 2018

In line with the national call for increase in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Education in Malaysia, the Chemical Companies of Malaysia (CCM) collaborated with Study Hub Asia and Akademi Sains Malaysia to create its very first one-of-a-kind science challenge in Stadium Batu Pahat, Johor under Permodalan Nasional Berhad’s Minggu Saham Amanah Malaysia 2018. The goal of the challenge is to create awareness among students in hopes to see more of them developing interests in pursuing STEM-related careers in the future. 31 schools in Batu Pahat fought it out at the Preliminary, Semi-Final and Grand Finale rounds where the Top 3 Schools emerged as winners of the science challenge.

#StandTogether NATIONAL CAMPAIGN

Experts have begun to indicate that punishing bullies is not an effective measure to curb bullying in schools. With an increase in bullies among Malaysian youths on both online and offline platforms, Study Hub Asia joined in as a Programme Partner with the National Kindness Week initiative launched by The Star R.AGE and SP Setia. Alongside fellow partners from various organizations, Study Hub Asia contributed its expertise in school and youth engagement to the newly launched annual initiative. Schools all over Malaysia were given an opportunity to participate in the national competition featuring their best Kindness Projects done in school.

IMAGINE: A World Fit for You & Me (Children Advocates Workshop)

In May of 2018, Majlis Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Malaysia hosted a Senior Child Advocates Workshop, with the support of Study Hub Asia and Taylors’ Education Group. With a focus of educating and empowering Malaysian youths to be aware of Child Rights in Malaysia, the full day event was anchored on brainstorming and solutioning activities where participants were challenged with not just cultivating the ability to highlight key issues relating to children, but to also find solutions for the issues presented. The sessions involved developing communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills – in hopes to develop sharp, agile, creative and solution-driven Malaysian youths. The goal of this workshop was to empower the participants to penetrate into their communities effectively and to be a voice for children who need it.

#BAIKHATI CAMPAIGN

Cyberbullying has increased rampantly among youths as more children today have access to mobile phones. In collaboration with National Kindness Week 2018, Study Hub Asia assisted Digi Telecommunications on running an online campaign called #5DaysBaikHatiChallenge. During the 5 Days, close to a thousand posts online indicated secondary school students engaged in acts of kindness as a measure of standing up against cyberbullying. Top 3 Schools with the most posts submitted across the 5-day challenge won a special Teacher’s Day package comprising of goodies for teachers and a Celebrity Visit.

CHILD ONLINE PROTECTION YOUTH CAMP

The internet has transformed our lives today in so many ways that we could ever imagine. In Malaysia, 77.6% of the population relies on the Internet and about 54% of these Internet users’ population are below 30 years of age (MCMC Internet Users Survey, 2016). Albeit the internet being a place of convenience, connectivity and community, there in lies many risks and threats tethered to it. In efforts to work towards educating children and youths to be safe and smart Internet users, Study Hub Asia partnered together for a 2D1N Youth Camp crafted by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commision (MCMC) in collaboration with key strategic partners namely UNICEF, Digi and Generasi Gemilang for a time of both light-hearted engagement and in-depth sessions on issues pertaining to cyber wellness and safety in order to kickstart conversations with our children about the online world.

IMU SCIENCE DISCOVERY CHALLENGE

A pioneer in healthcare related STEM education, International Medical University (IMU) and Study Hub Asia co-designs the annual event, IMUSDC to showcase STEM career opportunities, bringing together students across the country to one of the largest Science Challenges in Malaysia. Participating students in the event will compete against other schools in Knowledge on Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics through exciting rounds of quizzes.

The project also works with various STEM industry partners on exhibition showcases, hands-on workshops and expert forum discussion, making IMUSDC an event for schools and students to anticipate every year.

MYSEKOLAH SHORT FILM COMPETITION

MYSEKOLAH is an opportunity for students to have the freedom in expressing their creativity, by creating a video for their school. As Malaysians, we are a consumer of creative contents rather than a creator. Pushing the agenda forward, IACT College and Study Hub created the MYSEKOLAH platform for students to showcase their love to their school through the medium of a 5 minutes video. The competition has been participated by 500 schools nationwide with media coverage by The Star, Sin Chew Daily, Nan Yang Daily and China Press.

SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT WITH ACCA

According to Pemandu’s Economic transformation program, one of the key requirement for Malaysia to transform in to a high income nation is to have 60,000 professionally certified chartered accountants. In 2017 the number of chartered accountants in Malaysia stands at 33,000. In addressing this issue, Study Hub and ACCA work together in addressing this key problem through educating students and School Counsellors on the potential growth and demand of a certified chartered accountant. In 2017 alone we have reached out to more than 10,000 students and 500 counsellors through various engagement programs.

SAYA SAYANG SAYA TOWNHALL SESSION

Did you know 8 out of 10 rape cases are originated from social media platforms and 6 out of 10 of them went un-reported, with the majority of them teens below the age of 18.

Conducted in 8 states nationwide, Saya Sayang Saya townhall session is a laid back forum style to raise awareness on potential danger of cyber grooming in the social media space. The forum attended by students and counsellors is a joint collaboration between Digi, UNICEF, Women:Girls, Star R.AGE, Police DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM) and Federation of Reproductive Health Association Malaysia (FRHAM). The townhall is designed in a way where a safe space is created for students to discuss on the taboo topics of Cyber grooming. As an outcome, students are educated on the predator’s modus operandi on chat platforms, and learn preventive measures from becoming the next victim.

This project has engaged and impacted 1,500 students and more than 300 teachers across 8 states in Malaysia.

COUNSELLOR ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

Counsellors are the forefront influencer to our students, their words and knowledge is powerful enough to influence a student decision making, hence we believe in empowering students through equipping counsellors with the right information. Along the years we have done programs and benefitted more than 1,000 counsellors across the country, with partners ranging from IMU, ACCA to Digi and more on various area of interest.

DIGI CYBERSAFE CAMP

As a leading telco in Malaysia with one of the most youth subscribers, Digi’s social responsibility is in the business of empowering youth to use internet safely. With Study Hub Asia, we engaged youths from various background such as students from SMK schools, International Schools, Indigenous and refugee youth, to attend the 3D2N Cyber Safe Camp. It serves as a training ground for students on potential internet hazards and preventive measure. The youths left the camp acting as a mouthpiece for the Cyber Safe cause in their own community.
